What is prostatic urethral lift (PUL)?

PUL is a minimally invasive day surgical procedure. It involves the use of small permanent implants to draw apart enlarged prostate tissue, compressing and narrowing the urethra within the prostate gland. Lifting and holding the enlarged prostate tissue out of the way reduces pressure on the urethra, thus relieving urinary symptoms. This procedure does not involve cutting or removing prostate tissue.

Why Choose Prostatic Urethral Lift (PUL)

Fast Symptom Relief Without Major Surgery

The primary advantage of a PUL is quick and effective relief from BPH symptoms, like frequent or difficult urination. In many cases, you may no longer need a catheter, giving you a better quality of life with minimal downtime.

Minimally Invasive & Same-Day Discharge

PUL is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that usually takes less than an hour. Most patients go home the same day without needing a catheter. Recovery is quicker and more comfortable than traditional surgical options.

Preserves Sexual Function

Unlike some BPH treatments, PUL does not interfere with sexual performance. The procedure helps avoid side effects like erectile dysfunction and reduces the risk of retrograde ejaculation, allowing you to maintain a healthy sex life.

High Long-Term Success Rate

PUL has a strong track record. Studies show that less than 14% of patients need further treatment within five years. This makes it one of the more reliable BPH treatments with fewer long-term complications.

Know the Limitations & Risks

While PUL is highly effective, it’s not suitable for everyone. Patients with very large prostates or urinary retention issues may not be ideal candidates. Some minor side effects like urinary urgency, mild discomfort, or temporary blood in urine can also occur.

Low Risk of Complications Compared to Surgery

PUL offers a safer alternative to traditional surgery for many patients. With no incisions or tissue removal, the risk of complications such as infections, bleeding, or long recovery times is significantly reduced.

What happens After a prostatic urethral lift?

After a PUL, your healthcare team will remove the UroLift device, take your legs out of the stirrups and help you off the table. They’ll then monitor you to ensure you don’t have any side effects, including difficulty peeing. Your urologist may insert a catheter if you can’t pee. They’ll let you go home (discharge you) once they determine you no longer need monitoring.
